Spotlight On: APASSIONATA's Sylvie Willms

To contact us Click HERE
Philips Arena is thrilled to welcome APASSIONATA “The Beginning” to Atlanta on June 23* for two performances! This show features over 40 horses from across 13 breeds that are trained and handled by an extremely diverse group of people. Here’s an inside look at what it takes to become an internationally acclaimed equestrian:

Meet one of APASSIONATA’s stars: Sylvie Willms! Sylvie was truly born to ride. She comes from a family of horse experts, including father Alex and mother Céline, who have been training and riding thoroughbred horses in Belgium and France for more than 300 years. The family is often touring with their horses, but when they aren’t, you can find them at their castle in Burgundy, France, training horses for film productions. This year, however, Sylvie will be hitting the road to join APASSIONATA “The Beginning” on their North American tour. She will be performing several numbers of freestyle Liberty Dressage and Friesian Quadrille.

Sylvie works with her horses every day, which has lead her to develop special relationships with them. Her 18-year-old Lusitano (an ancient Portuguese breed developed for war, dressage, and bull-fighting), named Litador, is no exception. Litador joined the Willms family when he was three years old and was extremely timid from being ridden at too early of an age. Sylvie remained patient and, by taking his training slowly, gradually persuaded Litador to trust her. Now, the Lusitano allows Sylvie to ride him with no reservations.

Though Sylvie’s numbers in APASSIONATA “The Beginning” make dressage and quadrille look easy, it is anything but. She works with each of her horses every day, even if she’s only watching sometimes. According to Sylvie, “You need an incredible amount of patience and time for every single horse.” It’s clear that she provides this, too. All you have to do is watch her Arabian, Friesian, and Arab-Welsh horses gracefully dance through the arena to know that her passion and patience have truly made her a star!

Cirque du Soleil's "Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour" Brings Two Atlanta Natives Back To Their Hometown

When Philips Arena welcomes Cirque du Soleil next weekend for its “Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour” show, it will be more than just another show for some of the Cirque du Soleil team. It will also be a homecoming of sorts for two of the tour’s members.

Travis Payne is an Atlanta native and graduate of Northside School of the Arts. He began working with Michael Jackson as a choreographer in 1991 for Jackson’s music video, “Remember the Time.” He continued to work with the King of Pop until his death in 2009, including working with Jackson on his “This is It” tour.

Now, Payne is working as a Principal Choreographer for Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to Jackson’s life. However, he doesn’t plan to go with the show to Las Vegas for its expected opening in spring of 2013. Instead, Payne is hoping to open a dance studio in Atlanta, a dream he has had for a long time. He has been in talks to take over the former Atlanta Ballet building in Midtown according to a recent Access Atlanta article.
The other member of the Cirque du Soleil team coming back to his roots is saxophonist Mike Phillips. As part of the live band that accompanies most of the 25 song show, Phillips has had a chance to experience the whole spectacle but actually names part of the show that he isn’t involved in as his favorite. He says the quieter moment with a video of young Michael singing “I’ll Be There” reminds him of Jackson’s childhood intentions and that they were the same intentions he had when he passed.

The show is undoubtedly one that any Michael Jackson fan won’t want to miss. According to Travis Payne, via Access Atlanta, “You will laugh, cry, cheer, and reminisce. You’re never going to see a Michael Jackson concert again, but this is a wonderful homage.”

We hope to see you all at Philips Arena to welcome back these fellow Atlantans as they bring us the life story and music of the iconic Michael Jackson!

Atlanta Hawks & Philips Arena Give Back During June Service Day

To contact us Click HERE
Last week, the Atlanta Hawks & Philips Arena team took a little break from our normal routine to give back to the community. Donned in the iconic “We Are The Highlight Factory” t-shirts, accountants put down their calculators, marketers stopped tweeting, and Harry the Hawk dropped the basketball for a few hours to pick up paintbrushes and screwdrivers. Our goal: to improve The Salvation Army William Booth Towers residences.

The William Booth Towers is a home for the elderly, handicapped, and disabled. It’s owned and operated by The Salvation Army and provides people who qualify for a rent subsidy a great community in which to reside and participate.

When we arrived, many of the residents were low on furniture. Some didn’t have dressers or bookshelves; others needed a new bed. So, one team got to work building Ikea furniture: everything from dressers to bookshelves to a full kitchen table and chairs.

An intern works on building a dresser for one of the Booth Towers’ residents.
While they worked their fingers to the bone and did their best deciphering the picture book-esque instruction for the furniture, other teams painted the halls or transported new mattresses to appreciative residents.

A Philips Arena team member paints a hallway to make it look fresh and new.

Overall, the experience was humbling and rewarding. Not only did it provide the Atlanta Hawks & Philips Arena team a chance to work together in a different capacity and get to know each other a little better, it also provided us the chance to give back to our much deserving fans and fellow Atlantans.
We can’t wait for the next opportunity to get out and make a difference in our city!

Some interns give a fist bump to one of the residents of Booth Towers.

Quincy Jones Thinks Diddy Doesn't Know Diddly About Music

To contact us Click HERE
Quincy Jones is certainly one of the most influential producers of all time, having lent his midas touch to everyone from Ray Charles to Michael Jackson. As such, he's an authority on music and is entitled to give his opinion on the careers of others in the industry. And on Tuesday, he had Diddy on his mind.
Speaking at a Spotify launch event (the streaming service was announcing artist-curated playlists), Jones said that the rapper and Bad Boy head honcho "couldn't recognize a b flat if it hit him." Instead, Jones noted, "P. Diddy has a doctorate in marketing," citing his clothing labels and success with Ciroc (his vodka company) as the rapper's true talents. source

Who gon' check Quincy? Older people never mince words, love it!

Things I've Noticed This Week With The Kardashians

To contact us Click HERE
I would really like to know what the hell number laser treatment Kim is on. I know she's stated many times, and even to Oprah, that she's very hairy as many Armenian people are but my goodnis she's seen at least twice a month entering and leaving a laser hair removal establishment. She told the Big O almost all of her hair was gone in effort to achieve a beautiful complexion...whose hair is being taken?

Maybe Kanye was the one lasering away his pubs.

The one thing that I've been wondering all week is: what's the weather been like out in LA? Kim finally decides to wear something other than leather pants and boots while Kanye opts for all black everything and a hoodie of all things.

Check out some of Kim's section of clothing for the last week of June 2012...in the summer!

What are we mourning? The death of colors?

Thank goodnis Kourtney has a love of colors. Researching for this post has almost become depressing...

I love how devoted Kourt is to her accessories. She's worn this Celine bag more than a regular person would and don't get me started on those tan lacey Louboutin sandals we'll surely see again once she gives birth in the next minute or so.

Now Mrs. Odom was relatively quiet this week although it was her birthday on Wednesday but we were able to see the tall beauty when she ventured out with her sisters and mother to look at caskets...yeah you heard me, caskets!

What I noticed:

Kris Jenner is a happy camper.

Kim is dating Kanye West and rubbing shoulders with Beyonce.

Her other two kids do enough to contribute to spins off, endorsements and fill in whenever Kim is out doing bigger celebrity things. Khloe married a baller who will ultimately come back to reality life once he retires. Kourt is having a girl so I am assuming Kris is taking rights to her and a potential show and magazine spread when Kourt and Scott wed.

All Kris has to do now is create ridiculous outings for an opportunity for her kids to be photographed all while fools like myself tune into the show, yes they were taping, to see Kris' explanation/excuse as to why in the hell they needed to shop for caskets did the crazy shit.

I along with Kris Jenner laugh at all the people STILL saying that the Kardashians 15 minutes is running out...hunnee, they're into brand years now they have a while.

Until next week folks...

Sneak Peek: Oprah's Next Chapter Interview With The Miami III

To contact us Click HERE
Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James are still celebrating their 2012 NBA Championship win with a little fun and press. This go around it was Oprah's turn to let OWN ride the Miami train.

If you're what's hot in these streets at the moment with at least five people regularly claiming  you ain't shit or eff you Oprah wants YOU.

First Look: NBA Champion Miami Heat Stars LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, Part 1On Sunday, July 1, Oprah sits down with the NBA's Miami Heat stars—LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh—to talk about their historic win. Then, Oprah goes one-on-one with LeBron, who opens up about his engagement to Savannah Brinson and Dan Gilbert's infamous letter.
I'll be watching for this portion of the interview.

First Look: How LeBron James Proposed to His High School SweetheartBefore Miami Heat All-Star LeBron James earned an NBA championship ring, he gave out a ring of his own. Just after midnight on New Year's Eve, LeBron popped the question to his longtime girlfriend, Savannah Brinson. Dwyane Wade, LeBron's friend and teammate, held the ring until the big moment. Watch as this 27-year-old MVP reveals how he steadied his nerves and prepared for the proposal.
Sav has been much deserving of her moment to shine...love it!

Mrs. Bosh was right on deck on as well...

Tune into OWN this Sunday at 8pm for the interview.

Yay or Nay: Lauryn Hill

To contact us Click HERE
I know right now may not be the most inopportune time to do a Yay or Nay for Lauryn, especially since the obvious answer is Nay, but I simply wanted to lighten the mood. I'm not here to talk about a celebrity who happens to be the mother of 6 potentially going to jail because she purposely didn't pay her taxes...NOPE.

Anywho, what do you think of Lauryn's court attire...Arnold Drummond bush and all?

She looks a little frightened...or is that just, oh never mind.

The 2012 BET Awards Recap

To contact us Click HERE

Sooooooo I missed the majority of the BET Awards last night but that didn’t’ stop me from formulating an overall opinion of the show.

Let’s get into it…The Whitney Houston tribute by far was the best Whitney tribute that I’ve seen thus far and one of the most heartfelt tributes that I‘ve ever seen. Whitney’s tribute trumps all other tributes simply because Mrs. Cissy Houston took to the stage and sang! The mere fact that Mrs. Houston chose the BET awards, of any awards show,  to vocally solute her daughter speaks volumes.  I know Janet Jackson contributed to Michael’s tribute but come on, Cissy Houston?! I loved that all performers, including Mariah, were personally connected to Whitney. I kinnnnnnnnnnda wanted to see Mariah perform but her appearance was very appropriate and warming although I question her not attending Whitney’s funeral.Anywho, Monica Brown blew out her performance. I loved that she chose that song and did it well. Miss Brandy served Whitney well. Who knew an upbeat song of Whitney’s would be so fitting from her.  I don’t think that will or should be the last time we hear that song from Brandy.Whitney's brother was very uplifting as well. I'm still wondering was Bobbi Kristina in attendance, I saw Pat Houston and her daughter but no Bobbi Kris.

Let me just say here that I was very WRONG in predicting Beyoncé’s tribute performance. If you follow me on Twitter you may know that I dayum near assured folks that she would perform and possibly Monica (half right...give me my credit). Now I will take ALL credit for predicting that Brandy would perform during the show after seeing her mom in the audience. I knew once I saw Mrs. Norwood, and Ray J in a suit, that B Rocka would hit that stage.Other than the tribute I thought the show was an improvement. I was able to see parts of the show in silence because it was televised at the venue I was at. By far, Kanye and G.O.O.D Music was the best performace (saw the video) behind the Whitney tribute. Loved Usher's performance as well (saw the video).

I absolutely hated the sound  guy, nothing new , which is still an improvement BET has yet to correct. I’d like to know where I can apply for ALL the jobs of the people who dropped the ball last night. Someone is going to lose their job behind not censoring half the “slip ups” last night.Chris Brown did okay for Chris Brown fans I guess. It was hard for me to get into his set with all the thug shits he’s been doing lately yet he was out there shaking his tail feather like his report card depended on it.  He needs to stay in his lane and I’ll stay in mine.I actually liked the show minus missing the majority of it and the bad sound. Samuel Jackson was not as good as I had expected and his tacky attitude at the end of the show was so uncalled for. Yeah I know he’s Sam Jackson and doesn’t mince words but please…did he not know that he had to do at least a snippet of the after show? Did BET not alert him of this? Even if BET dropped the ball he should have had enough common sense and tact to do the after show and not act like an ass and above doing it. He sucked at hosting and I would have much rather see Kevin Hart again. If you care to know who all the winners were last night I suggest you go to another blog. All you need to know is that Nicki Minaj won AGAIN, Reverend Al Sharpton along with Frankie Beverly were honored and the Roc was in the building. I will get into King Jay Z and Queen Beyoncé taking the throne last night while introducing Kim Kardashian to the urban world in a WHOLE ‘notha post...

Wait!!! Was I the only one hoping that Ray J would flip the f**k out? Seeing his co-star ex Kim K sitting front row with people that wouldn't try to share the same air as him let alone rub shoulders with him must have been devastating as he sat next to his moms. I know he had all kinds of aspirations of working with Kanye before this...I know he did. I bet he cried in the car...

Lindsey will be performing his intimate one man show with songs from his recent album, "Seeds We Sow" and will be playing songs from Fleetwood Mac Classics and some of his favorites from his previous solo albums.

Lindsey says of his new tour, "As I've grown as an artist, I've gotten more and more in touch with my center, and that center is voice and guitar. Over time it has become increasingly vital to express more with less; that is my touchstone now, and the embodiment of that philosophy is what will be largely represented in the new show. I've been thinking of doing this kind of tour for a while, and am quite excited to be doing something new, something outside my comfort zone."

Lindsey Buckingham tickets are now available at Tons Of Tickets. Visit us to find his concert tickets schedule.

*APASSIONATA “The Beginning” at Philips Arena on June 23 has been cancelled.

Maxwell Goes (RED) for his 2012 Summer Tour

Maxwell is coming to Philips Arena on July 27 & 28 with his special TWO NIGHT tour and he's gone (RED)!
Many people have seen the (RED) logo around, whether it’s on various products or commercials on tv, but do you really know what the iconic (RED) logo means? We decided to take a little deeper look into the organization behind the color so that you can know how Maxwell is helping millions of people who are affected by HIV/AIDS and how you can too!

Here’s a little background video:

So, (RED) wants to see an AIDS Free Generation by 2015. That’s great, but how can you help? The (RED) manifesto states that all you have to do is decide to buy (RED) products, and their partner organizations will donate some of their profits (up to 50%!) to fight AIDS. It’s that easy.

The money that (RED) collects goes straight to The Global Fund, an organization dedicated to eradicating AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. All of the money that (RED) gives is spent directly on HIV/AIDS programs in Africa. Thanks to The Global Fund, 3.2 million people have received AIDS treatment! If you combine the AIDS, TB, and malaria programs supported by The Global Fund, a total of 7.7 million deaths have been averted. That’s pretty incredible!

What does this have to do with Maxwell?
Well, Maxwell is teaming up with (RED)ROWS to bring you a chance to see him live and UP CLOSE while also contributing to this great cause. All you have to do is go HERE for a chance to bid on tickets to his two shows at Philips Arena on July 27 & 28! But you better hurry, because auctions end on June 10!

Good luck & we’ll see you at Maxwell at Philips Arena on July 27 & 28!

Cirque du Soleil's "Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour" Brings Two Atlanta Natives Back To Their Hometown

To contact us Click HERE
When Philips Arena welcomes Cirque du Soleil next weekend for its “Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour” show, it will be more than just another show for some of the Cirque du Soleil team.

Tickets are still available for the shows June 29 – July 1. Get yours HERE!
